Questioning Everything: A Stack's Manager's Guide to a Transitioning Library
Andrew Hackler
Abstract
How does a Stacks Unit adapt to a place with little to no stacks? All of the unknowns of construction. All of the worries of change. All of the fright of being obsolete in the 21st Century Library. With the implementation of an Automated Retrieval Center (ARC) around the corner, many questions across every department about how a 21st Century Library would function. With the proposed changes to the physical space, new furniture, and a drastic decrease in shelving (a loss of about 80% of the collection), changes in the day-to-day operations were inevitable for a Stacks Unit. Navigating this change required assessing procedures, processing areas, and our role in the library.
