Accessing Shared Purpose: Strategies for Developing Mission, Vision, and Values with Your Team
Shelly Hypes
Abstract
How can a grassroots effort to create Mission, Vision, and Values be accomplished while honoring the already existing defining statements of a library at the administrative level? This presentation will outline the process and results of a six-month project to create Mission, Vision, and Values for an Access Services Department at a doctoral-granting institution with higher research activity. Attendees will have the opportunity to analyze practice-based material that defines and differentiates between Mission, Vision, and Values, and examine how development of these defining statements benefit high-performing teams. Strategies will be provided for creating space for all team members to participate, as well as techniques for including diverse learning styles and communication preferences. The process and final products outlined in this session help us understand our purpose, the beliefs that guide our professional behaviors, and how we envision our futures in Access Services.,
