Can't They Study at Starbucks?: The Value of Space in Academic Libraries.
Reilly Curran, Mickey Rayment, Stacey Fullwiler
Abstract
Space on college campuses is a highly valued commodity. New initiatives, programs and institutional priorities all compete for a finite supply of space. In this competition for resources the library can be an attractive nuisance with its seemingly ample, empty space. Underlying this assumption is confusion about the value the library brings to student success. Our poster presentation will explore the challenges of communicating the value of library space and advocating for student needs during the relocation of multiple student services to the library and the loss of library space during a campus renovation. Using space-use surveys, statistics and other data we will present strategies for working with a variety of stakeholders to protect student space, identify appropriate student support services and advocate for the value of the library.statistics and other data we will present strategies for working with a variety of stakeholders to re-envision the library, identify appropriate student support services and advocate for the value of student study space in the library.
