Don't Panic! Promoting Safety and Security Initiatives in Academic Libraries

Abstract

As the heart of the university, today's academic libraries aim to be open, welcoming environments while being mindful of the safety and security of their patrons and staff. This presentation highlights how we communicated initiatives related to active-shooter preparedness and new security measures while being sensitive to the tensions surrounding these issues and the need to provide focused and clear messaging. Included are details about our communication strategy, design rationale, materials and methods used, and stakeholder engagement. Attendees will takeaway recommendations for developing marketing and communication plans for safety and security initiatives that won't create or escalate fear.
