Abstract

Faced with running out of collection storage like many are, we started a plan several years ago to address this situation at one of our off-site Annex Storage Facilities. The plan has evolved and has become a reality for us in 2020, yes during the pandemic! We explored several types of shelving that would hold Library Book Trays to maximize our storage capacity per square foot. Going with big 53x36 standard high bay shelving (Harvard Model) is great if you have the facility and or starting from scratch with tens of millions of dollars., , This presentation will share the trials, planning, cost savings, and options you may want to consider., , Lessons learned., Fire system: Current sprinkler system, local, state, and national fire codes. Sprinkler system may determine height of shelving, Budget for the supporting materials (Boxes, lifts, labor, work area), Consider energy saving light fixtures and facilities upgrades during construction planning., Takeaways, Think outside the box., Funding planning, research, partner with facilities coordinators, budget ahead, Explore options. Not using industry standard, so what!
