Abstract

Libraries use front-line staff and main circulation points to provide high-quality services and create connections within the communities. Yet, Academic Libraries have moved towards a model where student employees mainly act as front-line staff and operate these service points. This is problematic because student employee goals are not centered on making the library an integral part of their community. While there are benefits - students willing to work undesirable hours while gaining entry-level skills - the negatives far outweigh them. The Access Services Department at Auraria Library is striving towards staffing the main circulation desk with library faculty and staff. By moving towards this model, Auraria Library will be able to make better connections with its community and improve its customer service and user experience. Please join me to discuss the planning and implementation process for taking academic access services in this new direction.
