Using the Google Model to Encourage Innovation in Access Services
Julian Aiken
Abstract
"Google's 80/20 Innovation Model has produced many of Google's greatest Eureka! Moments, including Gmail, Google News, AdSense, and the Google shuttle buses which transport their happy workers to the company's headquarters in the Fabled Underwater City of Atlantis (oh, alright then, to their headquarters in Mountain View, California.), , The Google 80/20 Innovation Model encourages Google employees to spend 80% of their time on core projects, and roughly 20% (or one day per week) on 'innovation' activities that speak to their personal interests and passions. All staff are encouraged to take 20 % of their time to work on something company-related that interests them personally. This means that if you have a great idea, you always have time to run with it., , We recently introduced the Google Innovation Model to my access services department. I'd like to describe the decision-making process, how we implemented the model, and the results we've seen (positive, negative and just plain funny...), "
