Repurposing Space for Emerging Needs

Year: 2012

Session Type: Cancelled

Topic: Space Management

Subtopic: Assessment

Abstract

Academic libraries are struggling to repurpose our physical spaces to meet new campus expectations. We propose to present how East Carolina University's Joyner Library has managed the difficult choices, personnel issues, and detailed planning to remake its physical space and to make it more navigable. Four floors of materials were weeded and shifted to create inviting study spaces and to welcome into the library the writing and tutoring centers, a mathematics lab, an art gallery, and a student learning disability office. Plans have been made to remodel the entrance area and circulation desk, expand and relocate the coffee shop, and mesh Circulation, Interlibrary Loan, and Security workspaces. Our experience, library survey results, and practical tips will be shared on how to plan effectively for space needs and staff workflows, how to evaluate multiple design options, and how to work collaboratively with library and outside personnel.
